Latest: Olympic volleyball star Misty May Treanor has pulled out of U.S TV talent show Dancing With The Stars after tearing her Achilles tendon.

The gold medallist is set for surgery this week.

Fellow contestant Brooke Burke confirmed the sad news in a radio chat on Los Angeles’ 104.3 MYfm on Monday morning.

She explained, “It’s such a sad situation… She’s outta the competition.

“You take somebody like her, who’s a supreme athlete and you think she’s one of the strongest in the bunch and we’re just doing stuff that we’ve never done before, and pushing our bodies to the limits. And, just like that, it’s over for her.

“The sad thing about Misty is, forget about the competition, this is her jumping mechanism. We’re all really concerned for her… It’s such a bummer.

“She heard a pop, so it’s really serious.”

The 29-year-old said the festival is already in talks with “ a few” headliners for 2009, but refused to reveal who they were.

She did however rule out some big names who she categorically hasn’t been talking to, saying: “It’s not Coldplay, it’s not U2 and it’s not the Rolling Stones.”

The only confirmed acts for next year are Franz Ferdinand and The Ting Tings who will appear “somewhere on the bill” as a thank you for their Glastonbury fund-raiser last Friday.

Many are predicting that Radiohead will headline the festival, following their legendary shows in 1997 and 2003. Another name being brandished around is Led Zeppelin, although this seems increasingly unlikely.

Ms Eavis explained that talks with headliners have begun earlier this year due to tickets going on sale six months before their previous date of April.

She tells the BBC: “Because our tickets go on sale on 5 October, we’ve brought it forward. So we’re ensconced in chat about next year and there’s a lot of good feeling after such an amazing festival (in 2008).

“We’re talking to a few people at the moment and I think pretty soon we’ll have some stuff sorted.”

A.O. Scott of the New York Times
is one of several critics who can’t figure out what Max Payne,
starring Mark Wahlberg, is supposed to be all about. But no matter.
“A coherent story would be a lot to ask, and would in any case slow down the
movie’s rhythm,” he writes. Likewise Claudia Puig comments in USA
Today: “About the only thing it has going for it is the stylized
production design and a few cool special effects, but the story couldn’t be
more inane nor the characters less credible.” In the New York Post,
Kyle Smith sums up: “Max Payne has three words on its mind: blam,
blam and blam.” Sam Adams in the Los Angeles Times is among those who
suggest that video games rarely make good cinema launch pads. “Turning video
games into movies may be one way for studios to coax teenagers away from
their laptops,” he observes, “but this time around, the results are
miserable, in every sense of the word.” And Michael Phillips in the
Chicago Tribune latches onto the obvious pun: “Max Payne,”
he writes, “offers max pain.”

Writing on her blog, singer Hayley Williams said that the band were having a ‘possible shot’ at the soundtrack at a studio in their hometown of Nashville.

The film is an adaptation of a Stephanie Meyer-penned vampire novel.

“We are back home. Recording again for a possible shot at the ‘Twilight’ soundtrack. The rumours are a little less than true but a little more than a lie,” she wrote.

The singer also revealed the band were pleased to be working on tracks for their forthcoming new album at home.

“It’s crazy to me that we’ve never actually recorded anything but demos in our hometown. It’s nice to ‘work’ from home, if you can even consider this work,” she added.

Paramore guitarist Josh Farro told Billboard last month that the band has “anywhere from seven to 10 songs” written for the album, the follow up to 2007’s ‘Riot!’.

Hit TV series Ugly Betty will get a touch of rock and roll - producers want Sir Bob Geldof’s daughter Peaches to appear in a cameo role.

Programme-makers are said to have written a new character for the show’s next series - a party-loving socialite who lives off a trust fund set up by her parents.

And they were reportedly delighted when they saw Peaches working as a co-host on Nylon TV - because she would be perfect for the part.

A source tells Britain’s Daily Star newspaper, “It was clear that she is aware of how the public might perceive her and how she really is.

“Peaches has a precocious wit. It’s important to get guests on the show who are in on the joke and the Brits seem to do this the best.”

The 40-year-old was further asked to ‘work to enrich his wife’s emotional and spiritual well-being while being ordered ‘to resolve conflicts in a constructive way’. According to the alleged marriage rules and guidelines, Guy was prohibited from shouting at the Queen of Pop and was asked to devote his time to reading about Kabbalah religion with Madonna.

Following the celebrity couple’s decision to see marriage counsellors two years ago, the 50-year-old singer is said to have pinned up the document in their New York residence, sources revealed. And if Guy was to violate any of the rules, then Madonna apparently reminded him of their alleged agreement. “Guy felt bound up like a kipper,” the Sun quoted a family friend as saying.

The reclusive star was glimpsed after touching down with Brad and the kids at a New York airport.

It’s been claimed that Angelina has spiralled into depression following the birth of twins Knox and Vivienne in July.

Most recently, a U.S. publication reported that Brad has been encouraging Angelina to seek help for her dark moods and crisis of self-confidence.

“Brad is so determined to get her back to her old self that he put her in therapy to get her to eat, get out of the house and put an end to her intense mood swings,” a source tells Star.

“Angelina didn’t want to accept the fact that she was struggling after the twins were born and was really resistant to Brad’s pleas for her to get help.”

Whatever the truth to these claims, Angelina certainly cut a glum figure as she clutched a smiling Shiloh yesterday.

The actress is in the U.S ahead of the premiere of new movie Changeling, which will mark her first official public appearance since she became a mum-of-six.

Clarity over the maverick moneyman’s motives can take longer.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s usually … smoke,” said a wag at Lions Gate Entertainment Corp on Tuesday, a day after news circulated that Icahn had acquired a 9.2% stake in the parent company of the Lionsgate film studio.

Company execs suggested Icahn’s recent share buys simply mean the oft-combative investor recognizes an undervalued stock when he sees ones — and may have opinions over how to raise its value.

“My sense is that with a bigger stake he’s going to be interested in discussing with us smart moves that he considers to be of benefit for shareholders,” Lions Gate vice chairman Michael Burns said.

Icahn may have “a couple of things on his radar” as potential acquisition targets, Burns added. He declined to say what those might be.

Meantime, Burns’ market losses turned out to be Icahn’s gain. The Lions Gate executive lost almost half of his common shares as a result of a forced liquidation by Merrill Lynch on October 10, unintentionally helping Icahn boost his 3.7% stake when the big chunk of stock came onto the market.

Regulatory filings show Merrill sold about 700,000 of Burns’ shares for a total $4 million after a margin call was triggered by the company’s share price dipping below $6. Burns had pledged the shares as collateral on a ranch that he owns near Big Sur.

Lines into the sanctuary of Greater Grace Temple started to form more than an hour before Monday’s funeral service. Former Temptations singer Dennis Edwards called Stubbs “the greatest lead singer ever.”

Martha Reeves, a Detroit city councilwoman and former lead singer of Martha and the Vandellas, called Stubbs “my Pavarotti.”

Stubbs died in his sleep at his Detroit home on October 17. He was 72.

But luckily there’s no sense of the album being rushed out. The Babes continue to work with producer of every self-respecting pop chick, Mr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Lady Sovereign, Katy Perry…), and lesser known (Robyn) producer Klas Åhlund. They’ve described it as being more mature; concentrating on their individual vocals, and indeed it bounds out like a Kate Moss Rimmel ad, all metallic, sharp-sure and savvy.

Opener and first single, Girls, is a reworking of Ernie K Doe’s song of Boots’ Summer 2008, and they happily stomp their attitudes all over it until you can’t remember it being anyone else’s. No Can Do is the super stonking bass-heavy follow-up single, playing to the Sugababes’ trademark super-energised big goodbye songs, addressing boyfriends that don’t quite come up to scratch. In contrast, You On A Good Day is a confusing Charlie’s Angels-type shrugging acceptance of a man whose narcissistic personality disorder is hitting them in the wallet.

The track that most begs repeated listening is Side Chick: a light revved-up reminiscence of Rihanna’s Umbrella with beautifully flowing harmonies tripping easily, nicely telling the boy to commit or be gone.

The low point of the album is the plodding Hanging on a Star, with Fergie style chanting and a hook almost completely ripped off from Offspring’s Pretty Fly For A White Guy.

The trouble with the Sugababes’ sound has always been keeping the balance between blending and preserving individuality, and they’ve managed it here on the whole. That is, apart from the bonus track, About You Now. It’s a sad example of what can happen when you have three soloists outdoing each over a piano to mean it the most – the result sounds like girls at the back of the bus, sounding like the Sugababes, and screaming out for an auto-tune.

If only they had quit with Call A Truce, the most beautiful ballad with opening vocals from Amelle: it’s a tired appeal for peace which finally secures her place and puts the ghost of Mutya to rest.
